Shawn Johnson, owner and metal-smith of the Bronze Lion,
through a serious interest in armour and medieval weapons as a teenager,
embarked on an intense self education in the theory and construction of weapons, armour and metal-smithing. An intensive education in Eastern and Western
martial arts (from Chinese Kempo to rapier fencing) has afforded him an insight
as to how a functional weapon should be made. In 1990, he made his first
knife in an attempt to make a more sturdy weapon than was was currently on the
market. Upon entering the Society for Creative Anachronism in 1992, he
built his first complete set of armour as close to original as possible while
still complying with the safety rules of the SCA. At that time, Shawn
attended Eastern New Mexico University studying Art and Anthropology gaining
proficiency in metal casting and engraving. While learning his trade, he
acquired skill in wood and leatherworking along with forging Damascus and
casting bronze. Since then, he has been steadily building armour, weapons
and objects of art, attempting to create as closely as possible to the originals
with a high standard of quality and detail. Since 2002, Shawn
has been working with a living history group to add historically accurate
products from the Viking Age to his portfolio.
